'The View' Hosts Rip GOP For Defending Confederate Flag, Compare It To Nazi Swastika

In this clip, the ladies from the View discuss the movement to take down the Confederate flag from the South Carolina state capitol, and make some very poignant remarks about race in American and what the flag represents. They begin by debating why the Republican presidential candidates have been so reluctant to talk about race when discussing the atrocity committed at Emmanuel AME church in Charleston.

Host Rosie Perez calls their reluctance out for what it really is political manuevering: “they’re going to alienate the racists, they could be voters, and there’s no other reason for them not to talk about it…I still do not understand the pride behind the Confederate flag! The Confederate flag was a response to SLAVERY. They wanted to seperate themselves from the US because they didn’t want to lose their cotton pickers, their slaves. Period. End of sentence. You can debate about Lincoln not being on the ballot in certain states, come on people. This is the origin of that flag.

Whoopi agrees: “It should not be flying anywhere…The only other argument you can make against having this flag shown so spectacularly around the South is the Nazis! It would be like having a swastika flying on your the house of your next door neighbors…If it continues to fly, the statement that’s being made … is that ‘We miss this really crappy part of history,’ and that is where the conversation has to begin.”

It’s a lively and interesting discussion that makes some very interesting and valid points about the need to take the flag down, which finally occurred this afternoon as Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina finally bowed to intense pressure and called for the flag to be removed.
