President Obama has been racking up wins all week, not only on the domestic front but in the Middle East as well. In new developments entirely ignored by the American media, the Kurdish YPG (People’s Protection Units) have liberated two towns in northern Syria from the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh) with the help of U.S. air power.
The liberation of Tel Abyad and Ain Issa are not only humanitarian victories but key strategic ones as well. With these towns in the control of friendly forces, supply lines to the Islamic State’s capital of Raqqa have been cut off. Raqqa is now left without the ability to receive reinforcements or ammunition. In addition, the loss of this key border region has cut into their ability to ship oil to the outside world- a crucial source of income for the extremist group.
It is a hugely important victory for both the YPG and a vindication of President Obama’s foreign policy decisions. Major gains are being made without the need to risk American lives, and the Islamic State is in retreat on the Syrian front. “It’s as if the Day of Judgment is coming here…mosque loudspeakers have been warning people to prepare for a siege. Every day, I’m seeing columns of fighters moving toward the north” reports an activist inside Raqqa.
It just goes to show how much FOX News and the right-wing media has hyped up the threat of the Islamic State. The fear-mongering that they and the Republican presidential candidates have been spouting is very far removed from the reality of the situation- much like every issue the hypocrites choose to address. President Obama has shown a very calculated and pragmatic response to dealing with the Islamic State, rejecting the jingoistic hyper-aggression of the right, and the results are beginning to speak for themselves. We don’t need to put boots on the ground to solve every problem- it’s just more profitable for Republicans that way.
