In this clip, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) absolutely destroys House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) on the Face of the Nation, countering Boehner’s half-hearted attempts to paint Sanders as “out of touch” with the American people. Boehner’s “evidence” is the fact that Sanders isn’t a tax slashing plutocrat like the Republican candidates and politicians all seem to be these days. Sanders really lets him have it, calling him out for completely ignoring the needs of the American people in order to cater to the whims of the super-wealthy and the profits of big multi-national corporations:
“I want to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. A recent “Wall Street Journal” poll said a majority of the American people want to do that. John Boehner is not going to bring up any legislation in the House to raise the minimum wage at all. And many of his members want to do away with the concept of the minimum wage.
I want to see this country expand Social Security benefits, not cut them. John Boehner, his party want to either privatize Social Security or cut Social Security benefits to the elderly and disabled vets. The American people say overwhelmingly we have got to expand Social Security benefits by lifting the cap on taxable incomes. I want to create millions of jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure. And I have introduced legislation to do that. Republican Party is very reluctant to spend a nickel to rebuild our infrastructure.”
Then he really gets mad: “I think, John, who’s out of touch with the mainstream, it’s the Republican Party, who want to give tax breaks to millionaires and not help the middle class.”
Sanders is absolutely right, and he has been consistent with his devotion to championing the needs of the American middle class and reducing the rampant income inequality that is putting huge pressures on the American people.
