In this clip, President Obama addresses a group of veterans in Pittsburgh, PA, speaking on the responsibility of the American president to use our nation’s foreign policy and overseas power wisely, to wield it with caution and pragmatism, sending clear shots at the Republican presidential candidates and their hyperbolic doomsday prophecies over the historic Iran deal and their relentless attempts to drive us into more fruitless and costly overseas wars.
More importantly, he calls out those working behind the scenes to make the Republican agenda a reality- the same people who lied to the American people, took us to Iraq, and made billions off the suffering of our soldiers and the Iraqi people:
And I also want to make a broader point. In the debate over this deal, we’re hearing the echoes of some of the same policies and mindset that failed us in the past. Some of the same politicians and pundits that are so quick to reject the possibility of a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear program are the same folks who were so quick to go to war in Iraq, and said it would take a few months. And we know the consequences of that choice and what it cost us in blood and treasure.
He’s absolutely right, and the world cannot afford for us to make another mistake like this. A war with Iran would cripple our economy and lead to the deaths of thousands. The Republican refusal to take foreign policy seriously is a threat to our national security. They have made it very clear that they care nothing for our armed forces or for the wishes of the American people- just for the defense contractors and neoconservative war hawks who throw thousands of dollars at their campaigns.
