Watch: Gov. Christie Vows To Punch The National Teachers Union 'In The Face'

In this clip, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie decides to play the Scott Walker card and take some ungainly, ham-fisted swipes teacher’s unions. Jake Tapper remarks that Christie liked to say “you can treat bullies in one of two ways. You can sidle up to them, or you can punch them in the face. I like to punch them in the face,” which on its own really demonstrates just what a sophisticated and cultured politician Christie really is.

Tapper then asks Christie who in politics right now deserves a punch in the face, and he immediately answers “the national teacher’s unions.” His first reason is clearly the real reason he feels this way: “They endorsed Hillary Clinton, seventeen months before the election!”

He does then stumble into some vague pronouncements about how unions are bad and teachers are lazy and greedy: “They’re not for education for our children, they’re for greater membership, greater benefits, greater pay for their members. And they are the single most destructive force in public education in America…I’ve been saying that since 2009. I’ve got the scars to show it, but I’m never going to stop saying it because they never change their stripes.”

It’s a very peculiar choice of words, as there is no merit to any of those statements, and their lack of any specifics or facts make sure that they don’t even stand out from the anti-labor hypercapitalist nonsense that spouts from the right-wing on a daily basis. Maybe Christie thinks doubling down on on anti-labor and anti-union messages will help him earn points with the blue-collar workers of Iowa and New Hampshire. It doesn’t bode well for Christie, who very badly deserves a punch in the face.
