In this clip, President Obama rebukes the the Republican war-hawks that are pushing for war with Iran and their attempts to portray the chants of a few malcontents as reason enough to start yet another international conflict, instead of pursuing peace and diplomacy. “I recognize the resorting to force may be tempting in the face of rhetoric and behavior that emanates from some parts of Iran…It is offensive. It is incendiary. We do take it seriously.”
Then the President says what has been desperately needed to be said: “but superpowers should not act impulsively in response to taunts. Or even provocations that can be addressed short of war.” It’s so gratifying to hear those words. President Obama gets it. This is not a game. Global politics cannot be handled with the blustery appeals to a delusion of American exceptionalism that the GOP are so fond of.
President Obama continues on to take some shots at the jingoistic Republicans who are pushing to trigger conflict with Iran: “Just because Iranian hardliners chant ‘Death to America’ does not mean that’s what all Iranians believe. In fact, it’s those those hardliners who are most comfortable with the status quo. It’s those hardliners chanting ‘Death to America’ who have been most opposed to the deal. They are making a common cause with the Republican caucus.”
It’s a brutal condemnation of what has to be the worst set of conservative legislators to ever darken the halls of our hallowed Congress building. The Rachel Maddow blog had this to say about the warmongers in the GOP during the Iran testimony: “In challenging Kerry and Moniz, Republican senators and representatives offered no serious alternative. They misrepresented testimony, dismissed contrary evidence, and substituted vitriol for analysis. They seemed baffled by the idea of having to work and negotiate with other countries.” That is absolutely not the way you run a world superpower. President Obama knows what’s up. We can only hope our next President does as well.
