A group of twenty-nine U.S. scientists have spoken out with high praise for the Iranian nuclear deal- including five Nobel laureates- calling it “stringent” and “innovative.” As Congressional Republicans with no knowledge of Middle Eastern politics or nuclear science denounce the deal with a virulent, ignorant fury, it is very comforting to see some people who actually know what they’re talking about give their opinion on the deal.
The Iranian nuclear treaty will halt the development of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program and limit it to peaceful, power-generating applications, in exchange for lifting the sanctions which have been crippling the Iranian middle class and keeping their civil society from growing enough to call for democratization.The letter from the scientists states that “We congratulate you [President Obama] and your team…the deal “will advance the cause of peace and security in the Middle East and can serve as a guidepost for future nonproliferation agreements.”
On the other hand, the Republican Senators on the Foreign Relations Committee like presidential candidate Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ron Johnson (R-WI), were demanding if Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz knew what an “EMP” device was, and what threat it could pose to America. Cruz believes the Iranian could kill millions of Americans by detonating an EMP device…in space. VOX’s Max Fisher had this to say about the inquiry: “Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons are a nonsense science fiction ’threat’ and a longtime point of obsession among certain conservatives, such as Newt Gingrich…. [This] line of questioning, to a top-of-his-field nuclear physicist, is a little like asking Neil Armstrong if he thinks the moon landing might have been faked.”
Of course, with Republicans responding to climate scientists so well, they are not likely to agree with these scientists either. But it is further proof to the rest of us that President Obama has done something historic with this deal, and that diplomacy and negotiation are always a better answer than war.
