In this clip from last night’s The Last Word With Laurence O’Donnell, the host skewers firebrand evangelist and Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz for his blatant flip-flopping and backtracking on past principles in order to appease the Donald.
Trump has insisted on making the 14th Amendment, which guarantees birthright citizenship, the “controversial” talking point of the month, as if there was anything to discuss or action to be taken. Ted Cruz has recently said on a radio talk show that he would “absolutely end automatic birthright citizenship to the children of those who are here illegally.” He also claimed he has been supporting that position since 2011, which is patently false.
That much is made instantly clear, as O’Donnell plays a clip of Cruz from 2011 in which he says “I’ve looked at the legal arguments against it, and as a Supreme Court litigator, I can tell you those arguments are not very good. As much as someone may dislike the policy of birthright citizenship, it’s in the U.S. Constitution. I think it’s a mistake for conservatives to be focusing on trying to fight what the Constitution says about birthright citizenship.”
O’Donnell sums it all up with an excellent closing remark: “Such are the contortions that some candidates will go through to get into the Trump camp.”
