LGBT activist, sex columnist, and all-around good guy Dan Savage appeared on MSNBC’s “The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell” to share his opinion on the bigoted, anti-gay Kentucky clerk who thinks it’s Jesus’ mission that she discriminate against human beings because of her radical and insane interpretation of the Bible. Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis, who has repeatedly refused to follow orders to adhere to the law and provide marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples because she says the Bible orders it, has proved herself to be a gigantic hypocrite.
The clerk, who has repeatedly defied the Bible by marrying four times, contends that she is being “asked to violate a central teaching of Scripture and of Jesus Himself regarding marriage.” Jesus, of course, covered many topics in the Bible — loving others, feeding the poor, treating the sick, and more — but did not say one word on the subject of homosexuality.
While no one should ever deny her her right to choose with whom she wants to be, and she should apply the same courtesy to others, Davis has a handy shield for her hypocrisy and hatred: The Bible. “To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God’s definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience,” Davis says, despite her own “sins.”
Interestingly, “one man, one woman” is just one of many types of Biblical marriages, including polygamy, a rapist and his victim, a man plus a woman and her slaves, a man and a woman plus countless concubines, and others — though it is senseless to hold one’s breath waiting for Davis to acknowledge this.
“I think Kim Davis is waiting to cash in,” Savage told MSNBC. “I predicted from the beginning that she would defy all the court orders, defy the Supreme Court, she would ultimately be held in contempt of court, lose her job, perhaps go to prison for a short amount of time. And then she will have written for her, ghost written books. She will go on the right-wing lecture circuit and she’ll never have to do an honest day’s work ever again in her life.”
“This is about someone hypocritically cashing in, and she is a hypocrite,” Savage said. “This is a woman who’s been divorced three times and married four times.” He noted that Davis “gave birth to twins five months after divorcing her first husband, (and) they were fathered by her third husband but adopted by her second husband.”
“She’s now onto her fourth husband,” he continued. “Jesus Christ himself in scripture condemned divorce, called it adultery and forbids it. Jesus Christ himself in scripture says not one word about same-sex marriage.” The activist explained that Davis should have respected the Supreme Court’s decision — and the law — rather than refuse to perform her duties:
“She’s not being asked to perform a sacrament, she is tasked with ascertaining that the people in front of her, the couple in front of her, have a legal right to get married and to provide them with that license. She is not a minister. She actually thinks she works for God there in the county courthouse, when she actually works for Caesar — and someone needs to acquaint her with that fact.”
