In this video, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) takes the media to task for failing to accurately report on the austerity of the Republican budget proposal. “One of the problems I always have with this is when we tell the American people what’s actually in the budget, they say naw, you’re being partisan! This can’t be true! And the media sometimes says ‘This is so absurd, let’s not even talk about it!”
He goes on to dissect and condemn the Republican budget proposal for what is turning into a perennial onslaught of cuts to healthcare, the social safety net, education and student aid while cutting taxes on businesses and the one percent. The GOP’s plan would throw 27 million Americans off of health insurance, cut $90 million away from Pell Grants, and cuts food assistance by $127 billion. Sanders rakes them over the coals: “Their intention is to balance the budget on the backs of the elderly, the children, the sick, and the poor. Needless to say, our view of what the American people want and what the American people need is very different.”
We are lucky to have a middle-class champion like Senator Sanders working tirelessly to raise awareness on what exactly the Republicans have in store for the American people with their new budget, especially now that they are in control of both Houses of Congress.
