Heavy rains and floods are currently wreaking havoc throughout South Carolina. A state of emergency has been declared and FEMA is being deployed to assist with the disaster. South Carolina Republicans, including presidential candidate and Senator Lindsey Graham, have rushed to Washington to plead for federal disaster relief funds- even though all but one of them (Rep. Tom Rice) voted against disaster relief bill for Hurricane Sandy victims.
Graham was confronted by his callous disregard for the people of New Jersey and his blatant hypocrisy by Wolf Blitzer on CNN, and in a most uncreative pivot for a man who thinks he could be President, said he didn’t remember that, so it must not be true. “I’m all for helping the people in New Jersey. I don’t really remember me voting that way” Graham said. When further questioned, he said “anyway, I don’t really recall that, but I’d be glad to look and tell you why I did vote no, if I did.”
The people of South Carolina deserve disaster funding as much as every state in our Union does. It is absolutely shameful that Lindsey Graham and other Republicans decided to use the Hurricane Sandy relief funds as a weapon in a petty budget dispute, and even more so that he doesn’t even have the courage to face up to his own decisions. Time and time again, they oppose relief for other states but, like Ted Cruz, run begging to Washington as soon as something happens in their states. It’s a show of astounding hypocrisy that really just goes to emphasize that nobody on the right has the compassion, empathy, or honesty to be President of the United States.
